Printable Bird Feeder Plans - A Practical Way to Keep Bird Feeder Blueprints

!: Printable Bird Feeder Plans - A Practical Way to Keep Bird Feeder Blueprints

I found that printable bird feeder plans are such a practical solution to keep them from getting lost. There are a lot of books and magazines on the market about bird feeders but they eventually get lost or damaged in the making of the bird houses.

I remember when I was in fourth grade, I had to do a project in school. My dad and I decided to make a bird feeder. He had purchased a book with bird feeder plans in it and he told me I would be allow to pick which one I wanted and that we would make it together.

Well, when the time came to do the project, guess what, he could not find the book anywhere. Turned out that he finally remembered that he let a friend borrowing it a few months before and he could not get the hold of him. How embarrassing! I was waiting outside while he was searching the whole house for the book.

He finally decided to go to a book store and buy a new one. It was all right but the new book got really dirty after being in the workshop for a while and after I got my dirty fingers all over it. Then it got lost again. This was twenty five years ago and we did not have this thing we have today: the internet.

My dad went through the same scenario last week but this time with my height year old son. He saw all the bird feeders and bird houses in his yard and he asked him if they could make one together. Sure! This time he was so well prepared for this he looked like a high tech grandpa.

He has this woodwork plans database access on the internet. So they went together on the computer and started looking at all the bird feeder plans available. My son wanted to do them all, my dad just wanted to do one for the time being, so my son picked his favorite one. Then all he had to do was to print it out! He even printed two copies so my son could keep one to show his project in class.

Then they went outside in the workshop together and with left over pieces of wood, they were able to make the bird feeder together following the plan. My son loved it, he was marking the wood pieces and helping to put them together.

When I came back to pick him up, they showed me the nice bird feeder they had made. I told my dad that the plans were a lot easier to get the hold of that when I was little, and we both remembered the story of the book.

Nursing Home Residents Welcome Bird Feeders

!: Nursing Home Residents Welcome Bird Feeders

Everyone likes to watch birds at a feeder. Who can resist the sight of a black and white chickadee extracting the kernel from a sunflower seed? Or the delicate beauty of a bright yellow goldfinch perching at the feeder? But there is one group of bird watchers who particularly enjoy watching life at the feeder.

Nursing home residents around the country get tremendous pleasure from watching birds. In West Virginia, residents benefit from the dozens of feeders built by the state's Nursing Home Bird Feeder Project. Voluntary contributions by Kansas state income tax payers support wildlife projects through the state's Chickadee Checkoff Program. The nursing home program has given hundreds of bird feeders to nursing homes in Kansas.

An Ohio grade school builds feeders for nursing homes and donates them as holiday gifts. Local hardware stores donate the supplies, making this a real community project. A chain of stores that sells wild bird products offers bird feeder recycling: anyone who brings in an old feeder gets a discount on a new feeder. Store staff clean up the recycled feeders and give them to nursing homes, along with a five-pound bag of food.

In fact the feeders are so popular at some homes, residents organized bird watching clubs to learn more about the birds and share their enthusiasm with others. They invite local bird watchers to give talks about birds and show slides of the bird watching trips. In turn, local bird watching clubs invited residents to join their bird watching trips. An increasing number of accessible trails and viewing platforms make bird watching possible even for people in wheelchairs. And for those people whose mobility limitations restrict them to the car, who says you can't watch birds from the car?

Several nursing homes have extended the bird-friendly facilities to include bird hoses and birdbaths. At one nursing home, residents decorate houses for bluebirds and purple martins.

Hummingbird feeders are perhaps the most popular type of feeder. Slender translucent red tubes contain sugar water, which the tiny birds sip. Suction cups attach tube feeders to windows, so people can enjoy the quick movements of the colorful hummingbirds even from their beds.

Nursing home managers recognize the definite advantages of attracting birds to their residences. Bird feeders bring the dynamic natural world into the slower world of the nursing home. The colors, movements, and sounds of birds appeal to the senses. Bird identification stimulates the mind and provides opportunity for sharing and discussion. For those who are able, filling and cleaning the feeders are useful and rewarding tasks.

Giving to and taking care of others is a precious part of life. Taking care of the birds helps residents feel part of the flow of life, a feeling that too often gets lost in places like nursing homes and hospitals. Bird feeders give pleasure to nursing home residents and residents give sustenance to the birds--a true win-win situation. The new trend of installing bird feeders at nursing homes brings new meaning to the phrase, "It's for the birds."

How to Keep a Healthy Environment in a Bird Feeding Station

!: How to Keep a Healthy Environment in a Bird Feeding Station

Bird watching is a recreation that is enjoyed by millions of people every year. One of the ways these people find their subjects is by providing food for their feathered friends in especially made for bird feeders. However, many forget that these feeders, just like dinner plates for humans must be kept clean and germ free so that the birds visiting do not pick up any diseases. But, with a minimum of effort, these feeding stations can be kept germ-free and become a wonderful stop for birds on a regular schedule. Following are a few tips to help keep bird feeders clean:

Feeders should be disinfected on a regular basis every few weeks with a weak bleach solution (1/4 cup bleach to 2 gallons of warm water). This should be done more often in rainy periods and in the summer. The feeders should be rinsed and allowed to dry before refilling. Seed feeders should be given a good shake before refilling in order to dislodge any compacted seed. Wet clumps of old seed should be dumped and hulls should be cleaned off platform feeders and out of seed trays on a daily basis. Seed should be stored in a dry, air-tight container such as a metal or plastic garbage can. Seed should not be permitted to become wet. When it becomes wet outside, one should feed from a covered feeder that will keep seed dry or put out, only, a handful of seed. Sunflower hearts or bits should be offered in a tube or hopper feeder to keep them from getting wet, causing them to spoil. If you supply birds with suet, reduce the amount that you provide in the hot weather of summer. Hot weather can make suet rancid causing illness in birds. If the suet is too runny, it can stick to birds' feathers making it difficult for birds to keep clean and their feathers working as they should. Rendered suet or heat-resistant blocks, available commercially, help eliminate this problem. Sick or dead birds found near feeding stations should be removed immediately. Stop feeding the birds for a few weeks to allow the healthy birds to disperse. This will lessen the possibility of transmission of disease among the bird population.

By following these few tips, you will be providing birds with a much healthier and happier feeding station, insuring that they will continue to come and entertain you.

Wooden Bird Feeders

!: Wooden Bird Feeders

Wooden bird feeders make a nice addition to any back yard or patio. They are great to give as gifts, especially for someone who enjoys bird watching. A bird feeder can provide a great deal of joy, as well as keep backyard birds very happy.

A good, wooden bird feeder should be built to last outdoors. It should have a hinged top or bottom for cleaning. There are many companies that manufacture wood birdhouse. Some companies like Schrodt Design, Inc. are environmentally aware and use mill trim ends to make bird feeders and pack them with recycled materials. This company is known for their Teahouse Bird Feeders that are constructed of wood trim and hand-etched glass. They are really quite beautiful and depict many charming woodland scenes that are designed by the owner of the company, Gary Schrodt. For more information go to http://www.schrodtdesigns.com

Another company, Countryside culture sells sturdy redwood and cedar bird feeders that are designed like country cottages, cabins and barns. They have copper roofs and little, bird-shaped weather vanes. They are quite charming and look great in any backyard. They also attract birds and hold seeds well for a long time.

To decide what style bird feeder is right for you, first consider what type of birds you want to attract, and then what will look good in your yard or on your patio. For a formal garden you may want to choose a simple but elegant wood and copper design, but for a country garden you may want a whimsical design with bright colors.

There are also several attractive bird feeders that are easy enough for anyone to make. For natural-looking bird-feeders, a branch with drilled holes stuffed with suet, a hollow gourd with an opening in the side, or a pinecone filled with peanut butter make great bird feeders. For a more decorative look, use a bouquet of dried flowers with seeds, such as sunflowers or coneflowers, as a bird feeder.
